I Hate Zumba!

My friend talked me into taking a Zumba class yesterday. It's an exercise class based on Latin dance. In theory it should have been fun since I really like all things Latino and I love salsa music. But in reality, it sucked! Or maybe it is just that I sucked at it. It didn't seem like I got a work out at all probably because I was spending the whole time trying to figure out what she was trying to show us to do. In any case, I got to shake my hips a lot but I don't have much in the hip department so maybe that's why I sucked so bad. Needless to say, I will not be headed back to another Zumba class anytime in the foreseeable future.
But after the class, Marty and I went with my friend and her husband to the movies. We saw 21. It's about a group of really smart MIT kids who get together with one of the professors and go to Vegas on the weekends and count cards and make a lot of money. It was a good movie and if you're looking for something to see, I would recommend it. Thanks to my mom for coming to watch the kids while we went out.
It was supposed to be a boring night at home tonight but somehow Marty and I have decided to go out again tonight after the kids go to bed. The girl across the street is going to come over and watch movies so I guess you can't really call it babysitting since she won't even see the kids.
I'll write more later. It might be a busy weekend. Marty's birthday is on Sunday. It's fun because his birthday is the start of birthday season at our house. We have his in April, Lauren & Mackenzie's in May, Nick's in June, mine in July, our anniversary in August and Austin's birthday in September. They are all spaced out well and also far away from Christmas so it works out nicely.
In honor of my sucky Zumba class, here's some Shakira: Hips Don't Lie. Love to dance to this song. Maybe I could recommend it if I ever take another Zumba class. I bet Shakira would be good at Zumba.

  1. Oh Robyn,
I had to laugh reading about your Zumba lesson and the top of it was that Shakira song :)))
I'm really happy you've got the change to go out without kids and having fun.
Happy B-day to Marty!! Enjoy the weekend!

    Hugs,
    Gabi

    P.S. I miss you!!!

Hi Robyn: I miss you on the scrap trail, but I wanted you to know that I got a lot of dreary housework done today dancing with Shakira! My dogs howled, but I had a great time. I still have all the kits I bought and your freebies. Stay happy.

  3. Hi Robyn,

I stumbled on your post and really sympathized with your Zumba experience. As a Zumba instructor, I encourage you to try a different class if you're up to it. All Zumba classes are not created equally. Like any other workout class, they can be very different depending on the tastes and skills of the instructor. If you still think that Latin music, exercise and dance put together is a good idea, you might be able to find a class you like. Look for someone who goes slow, teaches to the abilities of the students and really cares about making sure you are comfortable. Cheers!

The reason you hate Zumba but love things Latino is because Zumba has as much to do with Latin dancing as Kentucky Fried Chicken has to do with good tasting chicken. Zumba is not dancing. It if line dancing.

My girlfriend and I once won a Merringue dance competition at a Latin club, so I know how to dance and consider myself fairly good. None-the-less, I walked out of a Zumba class with 2 minutes left. I was that frustrated with it. Unless you have attended this instructor's class a few times before, there is no way you could follow it. There must be something like 30 dance moves that you have to learn in one hour. I defy even a professional to follow half of them. You can't learn that much.
